Dear Members of the Legislative Council,
You know, as members of the Legislative Council you are putting all our lives at risk if you pass this monstrosity of a pulp mill not to mention all the businesses that will go under if it should go ahead.
I'm not going to go into all the poisons associated with this project as there are too many. We have a listing world wide as a clean green state a gem in this wide world ....if this goes ahead tourism fishing vineyards cherries walnuts olives and numerous other operations will go down the tube...it only needs 1 whiff of being tainted and boom no more industry all that's left is a pulp mill spewing out poisons and dioxins over a wide area of Bass Strait.
Even the mayor of Flinders Island is against it and you can't blame him as fishing is their main claim to fame....the effluent could end up in their waters as when the 'Margaret J' sank and the 3 fishermen were pressumed drowned just off Robins Island they searched all arround Devonport area and weeks later 2 were found in the Furneau group. The other fisherman was never found so that tells us that the effluent will end up in Commonwealth waters as well as Flinders Island....and not to mention the endangered species that will be no more.
You know there is a rumour circulating northern Tasmania that the mill won't be build on industrial land but about 6 kilometres away on a wildlife santuary provided as a buffer zone for industry that is further north in the river [ I.e. Comalco, Temco ].
And if Gunns are allowed to manufacture chlorine on the premises of this pulp mill then it only needs 1 accident and all of the tamar plus half of launceston will be up the creek [we will be no more].
And not only that, we will have to put up with the stench spewed out daily of rotten egg gas 24/7 for the next 30+ years
I will never vote liberal or labor again from now on I will be as green as the grass that grows as I feel let down by both major parties.... 76 % of Tasmanians are against this project doesn't that tell you something.
Now in Tasmanian Parliament they have tabled the permits but the liberals or the greens are not allowed access yet as Gunns have to approve it all so they can ask for ammendments to the permits ....this is a joke no wonder the mainlanders label us as having 2 heads but only one brain haha the jokes on us.
This state is very close to cival unrest.
They now say they are going to put hefty fines on us if our wood fires put out smoke for further than 30 metres[$200 to $1000 fines] well wood fires only burn for approximatly 5 to 6 months a year not 24/7 like the pulp mill will and it takes thousands upon thousands of wood fires to equal what one pulp mill will belch out in access of 30 years.
God help us if we have to live through cold winters while this pulp mill burns our trees so it can make paper pulp that will probably be cheaper bought from China.
I havn't even spoke about the 40 gigalitres of water this pulp mill will be wanting ...we have been in drought condidtions now for numerous years . Our farmers in the midlands need water for irrigation to alleviate the drought conditions each year ...don't you think this problem should be addressed before they allocate 40 gl of water to this pulp mill.
Hell do we live in a democracy or a dictatorship regime I'm starting to wonder.
Gaye Nicholas
