Polls measuring opposition to the proposed pulp mill (September 2007)

12 September 2007 Galaxy poll on voter intentions
Investors for the Future of Tasmania commissioned Galaxy to poll attitudes of 1004 voters around Australia towards Gunns’ pulp mill.
The sample included 302 people from New South Wales, 280 from Victoria and Tasmania, 189 from Queensland, 121 South Australia and 112 Western Australia. Results:

  • Supported the mill 21%;
  • Opposed the mill 41%;
  • Undecided 38%.

On a two answer preferred basis; support = 34%, opposed = 66%.

Commentary. Of the 41% who opposed the mill, 64% said the issue would affect their vote. Of voters aged 35 years or older, 46% opposed the pulp mill. More voters opposed the pulp mill than were in favour across all states, capital cities, regional and rural areas.

13 September 2007 Newspoll on siting the mill at Hampshire

The Wilderness Society commissioned Newspoll to poll 400 voters in the Tasmanian electorate of Bass on 27-28 August. Some of the results were released on 31 August as above but the following results from the same poll were released on 13 September.

Question 6. As an alternative to the pulp mill in the Tamar Valley, it’s been suggested that one be built in Hampshire, near Burnie. Would you personally be in favour or against a pulp mill being built in Hampshire near Burnie? Results:

  • Strongly in favour 18%, total in favour 46%;
  • Strongly against 22%, total against 34%;
  • Neither / don’t know 20%


Question 7. If the alternative pulp mill in Hampshire only used plantation wood and no native forest wood, and this pulp mill did not use any chlorine in the production process, would you personally be in favour or against this type of pulp mill being built in Hampshire, near Burnie?

  • Strongly in favour 30%, total in favour 70%;
  • Strongly against 14%, total against 19%;
  • Neither / don’t know 11%.

Question: do you support the pulp mill being built in the Tamar valley? Results:

  • Yes 1.3%;
  • No 98.7%.

14 September 2007 ABC online poll
ABC’s ‘Difference of Opinion’ conducted an online poll about Gunns proposed pulp mill in the Tamar valley. Question: Should the pulp mill be built where Gunns Ltd currently want it to be built? Results:

  • Yes 16.6%;
  • No 83.4%.
